Marvel Tokon's DLC Gamble: Can New Characters Outrun a Rocky Launch?
The unveiling of Cyclops, Thor (Jane Foster), Venom, and Jubilee as Year 1 DLC for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls highlights a familiar monetization strategy, but a challenging PC launch complicates the value proposition for players.

Is the fighting game genre, particularly high-profile releases like Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, becoming overly reliant on a predictable DLC model that risks alienating its player base? The recent reveal of the full Year 1 DLC roster — Phoenix Cyclops, Thor (Jane Foster), Venom, and Jubilee — suggests a strong adherence to this strategy, raising questions about content value and long-term player engagement, especially given the game's uneven launch.
Developer Arc System Works, in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment, has detailed the upcoming additions to the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls lineup. Phoenix Cyclops, voiced by Ray Chase, is set to arrive on November 2, 2026, featuring a fighting style that blends Optic Blasts with the destructive power of the Phoenix Force. On the same day, Cyclops’ “Classic” and “Legacy” DLC costumes will also become available. This choice to feature the Phoenix version of Cyclops was a deliberate one by the development team, as Producer Takeshi Yamanaka explained on the PlayStation.Blog, aiming for “fresher visuals” and a “more exciting fighting style” to offer players something unexpected. This iteration of Scott Summers is depicted as believing in absolute justice, willing to take extreme actions, yet grappling with an inner conflict and emotional burden. Phoenix Cyclops is designed as an all-rounder, excelling at both long-range and close-range combat, and can accumulate Phoenix Force energy, known as Solar Shards, to transform into his Dark Phoenix form, a temporary power boost with inherent risks like health depletion, inspired by the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline.
Beyond Cyclops, the Year 1 Character & Stage Pass will introduce Thor (Jane Foster) in winter 2027, followed by Venom in spring 2027, and Jubilee in summer 2027, as reported by VICE and IGN. Thor (Jane Foster) will wield Mjolnir, bringing electrifying power to the battlefield. Venom will arrive with a Klyntar-themed stage, and both Venom and Jubilee appear to be more straightforward interpretations of their classic selves. The full Year 1 Pass, which includes these four characters, one additional stage, and a set of battle result poses for the game’s 20 base roster characters, costs $34.99, according to IGN.
While Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls launched to strong reviews on PlayStation 5, with IGN giving it a 9/10, its PC debut was met with
